Product Overview
The 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth gamepad is a multi-mode wireless controller that can pair over Bluetooth or connect by USB to play across Switch, Windows, Android, and macOS. This 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth gamepad user guide is based strictly on 8BitDo’s official product documentation for the Pro 2. If you are switching between devices often, the rear mode switch lets you change protocols without reinstalling drivers.
On the controller body, the top edge includes the pair button and a power/connection LED indicator, while the rear has a mode switch and a status LED for connection and battery feedback. For Switch use, the documentation notes that NFC scanning, IR camera, HD rumble, and the Switch notification LED are not supported, and the controller cannot wake the system wirelessly.
Ideal when:
- You want one controller that supports Switch, Windows (X-input), Android (D-input), and macOS modes.
- You prefer Bluetooth play but also want a wired USB option for stable connections.
- You use turbo on supported face/shoulder inputs for rapid, repeated presses.
Less ideal when:
- You need Switch features the manual flags as unsupported, such as NFC scanning or HD rumble.
- You rely on waking a Switch wirelessly from sleep using the controller.
Note: The player LEDs communicate the assigned player number; the manual shows up to four players, with more LEDs lit as the player number increases.
How to Use 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth gamepad
Set the rear mode switch to match your device, then press start to power on and begin pairing. Use the pair button to enter Bluetooth pairing mode the first time you connect to a new device. For wired play, connect a USB cable after powering on. LEDs change from blinking or rotating to solid when the connection succeeds.
Power on and power off
Press start to turn the controller on. To turn it off, press and hold start for 3 seconds. These power controls help you conserve battery and ensure the controller is not trying to reconnect in the background when you are finished playing.
Switch mode Bluetooth pairing
Turn the mode switch to S, then press start; the LED animation indicates the controller is active and ready. Hold the pair button for 3 seconds to enter pairing mode for the first connection. On the Switch, open Controllers, select Change Grip/Order, and complete pairing until the LED becomes solid.
Tip: After the first successful pairing, the controller can auto-reconnect to the Switch by pressing start, so you usually do not need to pair again.
Switch mode wired play
Turn the mode switch to S, press start, then connect the controller to the Switch dock using a USB cable. The Switch must be on system version 3.0.0 or later for wired controller communication. In Switch settings, enable Pro Controller wired communication so the docked console recognizes the controller reliably.
Windows X-input Bluetooth pairing
Set the mode switch to X for X-input on Windows, then press start; LEDs 1 and 2 blink to show it is active. Hold pair for 3 seconds until the LED rotates, then in Windows go to Bluetooth settings, add a Bluetooth device, and select 8BitDo Pro 2. A solid LED indicates a completed connection.
Note: The manual requires Windows 10 (1703) or later and Bluetooth 4.0 support for Bluetooth pairing.
Windows X-input wired play
With the mode switch on X, press start, then plug the controller into your PC using USB. Wait for Windows to recognize the controller before launching a game, since wired mode depends on the OS detecting the controller as an input device.
Android D-input Bluetooth pairing
Turn the mode switch to D, press start, then hold pair for 3 seconds to enter pairing mode for first-time setup. In Android Bluetooth settings, select 8BitDo Pro 2 to pair. The LED becomes solid after the connection is established.
Note: The documentation lists Android 4.0 or later as the requirement for this mode.
Android D-input wired play
Keep the mode switch on D, press start, and connect by USB to your Android device. The manual notes that OTG support is required for wired use on Android, because OTG enables the phone or tablet to act as the USB host for the controller.
macOS Bluetooth pairing
Set the mode switch to A, press start, then hold pair for 3 seconds for first-time pairing. In macOS Bluetooth settings, look for and pair with Wireless Controller. When pairing completes, the LED becomes solid and the controller can auto-reconnect later by pressing start.
macOS wired play
With the mode switch on A, press start and connect a USB cable to your Mac. Wait for the OS to recognize the device before starting play, since wired mode depends on a successful USB enumeration.
Use turbo function
To enable turbo on a supported button, hold the target button and press the star button. The home LED blinks continuously while you are pressing a turbo-enabled button, confirming the setting is active. To disable turbo, hold the turbo-enabled button and press star again.
Note: The manual excludes D-pad, joysticks, home, select, and start from turbo, and it states turbo does not apply in Switch mode.
Technical Specifications
Key user-facing specifications below come from the manual and focus on compatibility, power, and indicator behavior that affects day-to-day use.
| Specification | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Switch wired requirement | System 3.0.0 or above | (Needed for USB wired controller communication through the dock.) |
| Windows Bluetooth requirement | Windows 10 (1703) or above; Bluetooth 4.0 | (Required for pairing in X-input mode over Bluetooth.) |
| Android requirement | Android 4.0 or above | (Required for D-input mode compatibility.) |
| Android wired requirement | OTG support | (Your device must support USB host mode to use a cable.) |
| Battery (rechargeable pack) | 1000 mAh built-in | (Rated for up to 20 hours of play time on the built-in pack.) |
| Charging time | About 4 hours | (Approximate time to recharge the built-in battery.) |
| Replaceable battery option | Two AA batteries | (Alternative power option, rated up to 20 hours.) |
| Auto power-off behavior | 1 minute no connection; 15 minutes connected but idle | (Helps prevent battery drain during downtime; wired mode stays on.) |
Troubleshooting
If pairing or power behavior is not working as expected, check the mode switch position, LED patterns, and the platform requirements listed in the manual before retrying setup.
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Controller will not pair over Bluetooth | Not in first-time pairing mode for that device | Hold the pair button for 3 seconds until the LED rotation indicates pairing mode, then pair again in the device Bluetooth menu. |
| Switch does not detect the controller in wired mode | Switch system version is below 3.0.0 or wired communication is disabled | Update the Switch to 3.0.0 or later, then enable Pro Controller wired communication in System Settings before connecting USB to the dock. |
| Controller turns off quickly when you are not playing | Auto power-off timer is active with no connection or no input | Reconnect by pressing start, or use a wired connection if you need the controller to stay powered during long idle periods. |
| Red LED keeps blinking | Low battery mode | Charge the controller until the red LED stays solid during charging and turns off when fully charged, or install two AA batteries if you use the replaceable option. |
